Beauty Basics for Summer

Hi friends! Summer is in full swing, and with a new season usually comes a new beauty routine. Keyword, usually. I basically keep up with the same routine all year long because I love what I wear and I never want to change it. So this is really just my year round beauty basics, deal with it.

You may notice that there isn’t a mascara on here. I decided not to add it to the list because in my 12 years of wearing makeup, I really haven’t settled on one that I love the most. I jump around from brand to brand, trying out new things and loving them, but then finding an issue with it down the line. I just can’t give you one that I die for, so unfortunately, it’s not included, but mascara is always a staple. Ok, now let’s get down to it!

Summer Beauty basics

Revlon Just BittenKissable Balm Stain – I just love these guys. They’re very similar to the Clinique Chubby Sticks, but way cheaper. They retail for less than $7 and you can easily grab them at the drugstore. I’ve got a handful of them because the colors are great but they’re not so opaque that it looks like an actual lipstick. So they add a hint of color and double as a moisturizer, perfect for summer or winter when the cold chaps those kissers.

Benefit Hoola Bronzing Powder – This cute little bronzer is by far my favorite bronzer. I’ve switched between this and a NARS bronzer but continue coming back to this one. I like the compactness of the packaging, and also the little brush is perfect for highlighting cheekbones and your temple. And it’s the perfect shade  to provide a sun-kissed glow.

Benefit Brow Zings – This is the one product in my makeup bag that I CANNOT LIVE WITHOUT. I discovered it probably three years ago when I got my brows done for the first time at the Brow Bar at the Macy’s Watertower. My eyes were completely opened to the whole idea of filling in brows. It comes with two tiny brushes, a mini tweezer set and one side is a wax, the other side is a powder. Brow Zings make it so simple to quickly and efficiently fill in your brows, and comes in three (I think) different shades. It literally makes so much of a difference, the number of compliments I’ve gotten on my brows is crazy. When I look at pictures of myself from before I discovered this, I actually cringe.

Benefit’s They’re Real! Push-Up Liner – This baby is new in my life (along with everyone else’s) and it’s my new crush. It’s a gel liner that comes out of a pointed rubber tip and flows out perfectly, hugging the lash line the whole way. It honestly is a life changer in terms of the cat eye, making it almost impossible to ef up. Before I bought this one a few weeks ago, my liner was always uneven and I’d given up on it ever being equal, but the day is here people, the day is here!

Benefit’s The POREfessional – Another lifesaver, this primer is a godsend for people with visible pores like myself. Pores suck and there’s just nothing you can do. Well, I mean, you can exfoliate, but that only helps so much. But this stuff is like a silky serum of mystery. A little bit goes a long way, put on before your foundation and your pores are instantly minimized, if not totally erased! Plus it lasts all day! High fives all around!

Maybelline Fit Me Foundation Stick – I love this stuff. It’s become my go-to foundation because it’s really buildable and blendable, but doesn’t look cakey. Cakey makeup is the worrrrst. It’s got a gel formula in the center which I think is why it goes on so smoothly. I wear 310 when I just want an everyday look, but then I also have a 115 and a 340 if I’m highlighting and contouring (here’s a great video tutorial doing just that with this product). These are perfect for that technique because it’s so easy to just draw it on where you need it.

NARS Blush in Orgasm – I’ll start off by saying this blush has over 11,000 5-star reviews on Sephora’s website. If that doesn’t tell you it’s good, than I’m not sure that anything I have to say is going to change your mind. But Orgasm is just perfect for summer, and works with my skin tone year round,  in the summer when I’m tan and in the winter when I’m…not. And it’s got some real lasting power, good bang for  your buck.

So tell me, what’re YOUR summer beauty basics?

Dresses for Summer Weddings – Under $60

Welp, there goes the long weekend. Hope you made the most of it cause we’re not getting another day off work until September. It’s gonna be a lonnng two months. But it now being July, it seems that wedding season is in full swing. Luckily for my wallet, we only have two to attend this year, one the end of this month! But something tells me next year will be full of ’em, I’ve already got three lined up and we’ve still got six months left for people to get engaged! But the problem with so many weddings is no one wants to be seen in pictures wearing the same dress twice. Especially the guys. #worst

But seriously, it’s an issue. So what’s a girl to do? Be wedding web savvy! There are always beautiful dresses to be found that won’t necessarily break the bank, it’s just a matter of finding them. So today I’m sharing some of my favorite dresses for summer weddings, and they’re all under $60. Since we’re almost into mid July I thought it best to stick with sleeveless silhouettes. So if you’re on the hunt for some pretty dresses to look classy at the ceremony but then let loose at the reception, look no further. These dresses are classy enough to go from church to open bar!

Where do you find your dresses for summer weddings? Do you think it’s a big deal if you’re seen wearing the same dress to two in the same season or am I making it a bigger issue than it is? Let me know so I can save some doll hairs! But then again, buying new dresses is always fun regardless! Plus a lot of these would be perfect for the ladies’ bachelorette party too!

You guys, it’s July! We’re over halfway through the year, already, really snuck up on us. Well, me at least. But that means that the 4th of July is right around the corner, Friday if we’re getting technical, which I guess we are! My plans are lookin’ pretty relaxed, a kind of a play-it-by-ear situation happening.

But what I do know is that I will be wearing red, white and blue all weekend long! I’m one of those people that like to really go all out fashion-wise on holidays, sorry I’m not sorry. Now I know what you’re thinking, ugh but the fourth is in three days, I’m not paying for that expedited shipping! Welp, me either people. I try to avoid paying for shipping at all costs. I think I’ve only ever paid for expedited shipping once. And it was because I tried on my bridesmaid dress two days before the wedding I was supposed to be wearing it in and realized it did. not. fit. #mylifesajoke So I did what any sane (but actually have a panic attack) person would do, overnighted a new dress. I said a silent prayer to the JCrew and UPS gods for not screwing up that shipment! Moral of the story here is, don’t order a dress a size down in hopes you will lose the weight.

Ok so back to the point. You need some super cute ‘murica apparel for the weekend, and all of these puppies are available IN STORE. Yep, you can go pick em up this week. Unless it’s sold out, then it’s out of my hands and I take no responsibility! I apologize if you don’t have a JCrew Factory nearby, but those shorts are cute so you should probably just order them online anyway!  And bonus points, if the USA wins today against Belgium, you can keep wearing your outfits while cheering on America in the quarterfinals! I’m talking about the World Cup if that wasn’t clear. I believe!

Oh ps, I realize that it’s the first of the month so this should technically be a post about my goals. But, I’ve come to find that these are pointless since I’m a complete failure at almost all of them, so I think I’ll just keep them to myself from now on and come up with a new segment for the first of the month, stayed tuned in 31 days.

Hello hello, it’s finally Friday! Lucky me, I’ve got a half day. Our office seems to be a bit confused that the 4th of July is NEXT week, and that a half day may be better suited for that Thursday, rather than the Friday before, but whatever, I’ll take it. It’s Max’s birthday today (Happy Birthday Max!) so I think he’s got his heart set on some good ol’ fashion bbq tonight, which I’m 100% down with. Not sure where yet, I’ve been dying to try Green Street Smoked Meats, so maybe there, but Smoque is always a safe bet too! Then tomorrow we’ll be celebrating with friends who hopefully get him properly intoxicated since I assume once you turn 27, drinking becomes even more difficult, so nights like these come much less frequently.

You may notice that my Weekend Link image is a little different this week. I really want to make sure that all of my posts have sharing power, and the way I was formatting the images previously weren’t as sharable as I thought they could have been. Enter this new format, four little snippits from some of the links. So now you can pin that pretty image up there and then other people can find the links too, even if they’re not reading the blog. So don’t forget to pin por favor!

Chicago Reader’s Best Of  has been released. Read it, live it. (If you’re in Chicago that is. If you’re not, file it away for when you visit. If you don’t plan to visit, get outta here! Just kidding, stay, there is more non chicago-y stuff you might enjoy)

For my fellow shopaholics, ASOS has a big summer sale happening right now! So many adorable dresses up to 50% off, plus all sorts of other summery thangs!

Since we’re on the topic, Bauble Bar is also having a sitewide 20% off sale through Saturday, but they’re keeping it a secret. Use SUMMER at checkout to get the deal.

Recently I’ve been in love with Birdy this album. It’s from last year, but it’s def worth a listen, I’m willing to bet you’ll dig it too.

Another lady with killer power ballads? Adele, duh. Keep an eye out for 25 soon, without any warning!

Summer is sticky in most places. Which means braids are a godsend during these hot months. Try this twist on your everyday braid from the girls over at A Beautiful Mess.

Yogi friends, this is the bag for you. Also no, I haven’t done yoga yet even though it was a June goal, I suck real hard at accomplishing goals.

I wouldn’t much consider myself the baker in the family, my sister fills that role. But if I were said baker, I’d be making this ASAP! Toffee, give me toffee. Sidenote, ever had a toffee blizzard? Game changer people.

Ke$ha is back bitches. Homegirl is lookin’ so great on the cover of Teen Vogue, check out those freckles yo! Also speaking of freckles…she’s a beauty too!

Here’s a quick tip on how to use your AppleTV to stream Spotify through your TV speakers without mirroring. Booyah! Also, if you don’t own an AppleTV, go buy one now, best use of $99 ever.

That’s it for today, hope everyone has a kick ass weekend, I know I will since I’ll be spending it spoiling my guy!

Free Font Resources

8 Free Font Resources

As a designer, fonts are an incredibly important tool. Using the wrong font (read: bad font) is basically designer suicide. Quick lesson: there are fonts that work, and fonts that don’t. Don’t use the ones that don’t. I guess what I’m trying to say but failing at is, fonts make or break every piece of creative. You can have the right content, the right colors, the right hierarchy, but if you’re using the wrong font, boom, you’re dead.

So to combat the messy designer-suicide situation, I make sure to have plenty of great fonts on hand. The only problem is, a lot of the good ones cost more than I’d like to spend, because I’d like to spend nothing. I’ll pay zero dollars please. Since, unfortunately, money is not something that I’ve got just piling up  waiting to be spent on pretty typefaces. Said money is being saved for pretty bags, obvi. Purses trump fonts any day of the week. Except for when you redesign your blog and you decide it’s worth it to buy a $60 font for your header, but that’s the exception not the rule.

Anyway, a bunch of my non-designer friends are have asked me where they can find some fun fonts to spice up a resume, powerpoint, newsletter or what have you. So today I wanted to share with you guys some of my favorite free font resources. I will warn that some are only free for personal use, and if you want to use them for commercial use (which means you’re making money of whatever you’re using the font on) you’ll have to shell out some doll hairs, so make sure you look at individual fonts’ specific usage rights.

1. Font Squirrel

This is my main stay when I need a new free font, all of them are good, you’ll find no trash here.

2. Da Font

This site has a bajillion fonts, organized into very specific categories making it easy to find what you want.

3. Fonts for Peas

This site is awesome because this woman takes handwriting submissions and turns them into fonts. And she updates pretty regularly, so make sure you check back for new ones.

4. Type Depot

This is small Bulgarian design studio that has a few free fonts, quality over quantity right here folks

5. 1001 Fonts

Self explanatory I’d hope, but  honestly, not my favorite. Lot of novelty fonts though if that’s your jam.

6. Lost Type

A foundry that accepts whatever you’re willing to pay to download, I choose $0 because I’m poor and I suck at life and am a terrible person. Sorry?

7. The League of Movable Type

No more bullshit. Join the revolution. The first free and open-source type foundry.

8. Font Fabric

This is an independent type foundry that has a lot of typefaces, good amount of them cost money but they’ve got almost 70 that are free.

I’m fairly confident that this list is the most comprehensive on the entirety of the interwebs, so it seems doubtful I missed anything. But in the unlikely event that I did, I’m always on the hunt for new resources, so let me know of your go-to sites for free fonts down in the comments section!

(That top part is a joke. Sometimes it’s hard to get my sarcasm across via the written word. If anyone stumbles across a sarcasm font, hook it upppp!)
